In 2022, Vaidas acquired a five-ton block of grey granite. For two years, he pursued to carve two angels emerging from stone, inspired by Baltic and Christian traditions.
Divine Protection stands at 156 centimeters tall, spanning 229 centimeters across within a boundary where material and spiritual becomes permeable.
This work draws from two sacred traditions woven together by centuries of folk Christianity in the Baltic region. Among them were Laima, goddess of fate, luck, and protection, who safeguarded pregnant women, guided childbirth, and determined the span of human life and Dalia, goddess of material wealth and fortune, who gave and took away property, goods, and the manifestations of abundance.
In the 13th century, since christianity was acepted in Lithuania, the goddesses were merged with Christianity.
Divine Protection embodies this spiritual convergence. These are not distant, transcendent beings. They are intimate protectors, present in the vulnerability of human life.
Vaidas was inspired by angelic figures in Rennaisance, the Michelangelo’s precision of sculpture making. The matte grey granite finish was intentional as it allows the sculpture to darken in rain, brighten in dawn, become luminous in snow. The process of creation lasted 2 years.
The Garden Sanctuary: Divine Protection belongs in landscape, a serene garden where it can be surrounded by living elements. Trees, shrubs, and natural plantings create an outdoor chapel where this monumental work becomes the spiritual anchor. The two-meter-plus span demands space; the grandeur requires context. Positioned in a garden approached slowly where one can walk around it, experience its presence from multiple angles as it transforms the entire landscape into a sacred space.
The Private Collector's Residence: For those with expansive grounds, this sculpture becomes a personal spiritual sanctuary, a protection against evil energy and reminder that the boundary between earth and heaven is permeable, that one is never truly alone.
The Institutional Placement: Museums, retreat centers, spiritual foundations, universities, institutions dedicated to contemplation. It speaks to the deepest human needs: connection to something transcendent, protection from spiritual isolation, the knowledge that divine forces work on our behalf.
